The Old Scouts Super Seconds were set to face Spalding in their first merit table game of the season. However Spalding were forced to withdrew late and the Scouts were grateful that Wellingborough Old Grammarians were able to step in a provide a fixture. WOG's were two men short and so Scouts colt Josh Evens offered to play for the opposition and the sides faced off with 14 men each and no bench.
This made for a tough but enjoyable 80 minutes of rugby. The home team started well but tried to rush things on attack this plus some good defence from the visitors saw the last pass not going to hand and opportunities were missed. An early penalty attempt also failed and on the counter the visitors were awarded a penalty which they scored giving them an early 3 point advantage. Scouts were quickly back on attack soon scored their opening try. Scouts's own England deaf international Jack Hunt going over. The conversion slipped wide.
The visitors came straight back with an unconverted try of their own giving them back the lead. Scouts however where now finding their rhythm and scored twice more before the whistle blew with Bobby Bland slotting both conversions. The teams turned round with the home team up 19 8.
The Super Seconds turned in on in the second half with steady ball being provided by the forwards allowing the backs to dance round the opposition with some sublime footwork and passing interplay. Each of the 7 try's that followed was more attractive than the one before. Although the visitors did score one of their own in this half it was really all about the Scouts. The visitors never gave up but clearly the continuous defending took it's toll.
When the final whistle blew it was 64 13 to the home team with try's from Matt Brown 1, Bobby Bland 2 and 6 conversions, James Nimmo 2, Jack Hunt 1, Russell Lynch 1, Luke Reeves 1, Ollie Croutch 1 and Jacob Martin 1. The game was played in a good spirit and the Scouts would like to thank Wellingborough OG's for stepping up and giving us a game and a big thank you to Josh for playing against his team mates hope he is OK after his run in with Nimmo's nose.
