The Old Scouts 1st XV won the Regional 2 Midlands East league on Saturday and marked the highest-ever league finish in the club's history.
In what was billed as the "mother of all fixtures," a huge crowd was treated to a belter of a game. The occasion was very well managed by the players and they delivered one of their best ever performances. It had everything. Style, grit, flair, hard graft, tactical composure: it really was that good. So good, that Market Harborough had no complaints about the outcome.
The conditions were dry but there was a very strong wind and Scouts played in to it for the first half. Like many games, the team who manages the conditions best come out on top and Harborough simply did not use the wind. Scouts went in 15-8 at half time and in all honesty it felt like the hard work had been done and the 2nd half was just about expressing themselves. They certainly did that.
There was some beautiful passages of play that shows this group is ready for the next league, and with Will Brenan's Premiership level kicking, the scores just kept coming. The highlight of the game had to be the try from Noah Jervis. Every man played their part but Noah's try was box office, it was like you were watching a game on TV.
Tom Holliday kicked long in to the corner and the backs chased. The Harborough Number 8 was nearest to the bouncing ball and as he got close to the ball near the try line, he tripped and fell head over heals. He got to his feet disorientated and trotted to the ball as it was exiting the dead ball area, and then SPLASH! Noah dived from nowhere under neath him and scored. It was like Rob Howley in the European final.
The crowd erupted and it epitomised the determination of this group.
With a brief comeback from the visitors, it wasn't all plain sailing, but it was too little to late and the whistle blew with victory to the Scouts. Market Harborough will be gutted. After a first game loss to us they have led the league all season, only to lose all that hard work on the last weekend.
In terms of man of the match, there were many candidates but James Barrett (Sponsored by Ashby Clinic) and Will Brenan (Sponsored by E.M Rogers) were that good, we gave it to them both.
There is now only one game left. A chance to 'do the double' and win the Alliance on Wednesday 6th May versus Old Northamptonians. Make sure you come and watch!!
