Thrilling game ends winning streak but Scouts still unbeaten in league

It was never going to be a quiet one!!

The Northampton Old Scouts fought back hard in the top of the table clash, but couldn't quite get the win and the game ended in a 35-35 draw.

The game did not start well with Lutterworth walking through a lineout untouched and scoring within 2 minutes. This was out of character for The Scouts and gifting 7 points against the 2nd place side was not good. The day was very windy and a big part of the outcome would be who managed the weather better. In short, whenever The Scouts worked in to Lutterworth's half they would clear their lines deep back in to the away teams half. That resulted in the home team being 13-0 after the first quarter.

But, Scouts aren't 9 from 9 by chance and after two scores from Sharpe and Jervis, they managed to get to half time just 6 points behind. At 10-16 there was lots of positivity for the 2nd half with the wind behind them.

The 2nd half kicked off and Brenan kicked a penalty to make it 13-16. With both forwards going at it in the tighter channels, many thought it was going to be a close game but unexpectedly Lutterworth scored 2 converted tries and a mountain 17 point gap was built. The travelling fans were looking forlorn but the players were not.
A determined Scouts ran the ball, and ran the ball and the pressure finally got to the home side. The impact of subs Holliday and Daynes was showing and the back row pairs running and handling was punishing. In the space of 5 minutes the Scouts scored three tries from Daynes, Tom Holliday and Alex Jordan.
Winger Jordan scrambled closer to the posts in the hope that the conversion would take the win at 70 minutes, and as the conversion went over, the win was amazingly in sight.
But Lutterworth were not done and managed another score. Surely that was the game done.

Step up the forwards and hooker Bobby Bland, who scored off a powerful driving maul. The game was tied and Lutterworth were gob smacked. Did I mention the wind?......Tyler Mills went for the winning conversion from wide out but the kick was just too much.

There was a small glimmer of hope from an attack by Scouts with seconds to go, but a kick went in to touch and the whistle went.

Gutted to draw, happy (sort of) not to lose but ultimately the squad were pleased that they had fought back from 17 points down and almost won.

Maybe 35-35 draw was the right result because it sets up a cracking game at Rushmere road on March 16th. Get it in the diary now!
