Scouts win nail biter

The Old Scouts made it 3 league wins from 3 games in a fantastic game against Nuneaton.

If you were a spectator you would have thoroughly enjoyed the game. Some excellent rugby played in good spirit and a twist at the end!

With a strong history, Nuneaton came to Rushmere road with an air of quality about them, but this did not phase the squad at all and if anything makes the game more appealing to them. Coaches Karl Braband and Jack Green rotated players to try new combinations and fielded a different side to last week.

Scouts received the kick off and played with the wind away from the club, and after 9 minutes Will Brenan eased the nerves and kicked a penalty to get them going. 3-0.
Both teams were fielding big packs and therefore the rucks and mauls were heavily contested. It was Nuneaton that had success first with a try at 13 minutes. Unfazed by this, Scouts used the conditions and kept pinging the away team back in to their half. With a lineout at halfway, the backs ran a lovely move and Jervis scorched through the middle for a try at 25 minutes. What a beauty.

Brenan kept the score moving with a conversion and 2 penalties but then out of the blue, Nuneaton scored an intercept try and the half time score was 16-13 to Scouts. If felt like a lot of hard work for only a 3 point lead and whilst the team were happy they were up, you could sense the frustration with the score.

2nd half kicked off and it was Nuneaton's turn to start strong, kicking a penalty at 45 minutes and taking the lead.

Scouts (and the crowd) were waiting to see a reaction and after some good set piece again, it was none other than George Barrett to break the defence and score. Will Brenan converted and soon after Jervis scored again. 60 minutes and the score and pressure was favouring Scouts.

A turning point was a yellow card for Reeves. Like often, a tough tackle or crunching run from the 6 turns a game but for some reason the match official deemed the tackle unsafe and Reeves was served 10 minutes. In that time, a good side like Nuneaton will make you pay and they scored 10 points to make it 28-27 with 3 minutes to go. And here comes the twist.

The Scouts were under a lot of pressure and Nuneaton gained a scrum penalty. With the kick a dead cert in front of the posts, Scouts accepted their 1st league defeat was upon them. BUT!....The Nuneaton player blasted the kick in to the post, the Scouts players scrambled for the ball and eventually forced a knock on from Nuneaton. SCOUTS WIN!

Many will say they were lucky, but the home team thoroughly deserved the win.

Man of the Match = Lots of options, but Noah Jervis gets it. 2 tries and a try saving tackle.
