Forget planning, effort, assumptions, research, etc. No team really understands how they are going to start the season until the first league game kicks off.
The good news is The Scouts seemed to have carried on from last year and have also got better.
Last season Newbold were on the end of a drumming from the Scouts but they had also given us a rare defeat at their ground. Even though the squad was confident it was a tricky first game.
But, to ease the nerves The Scouts received kick off, had some neat interplay and Callum Inwood sprinted 40m to offload to Simmons who scored within 30 seconds, and it was 7-0 within 2 minutes. Brennan converting.
Those with good memory will remember Noah Jervis catching the kick off and scoring under 15 seconds last year, so to avoid a repeat of that game the Scouts boys dismantled Newbold to get to half time leading 42-5. Scores from Simmons, Jervis, Holliday, Lake, Bond and Jordan. With Brennan converting them all.
The 2nd half kicked off and the difference in skill and scores continued. However, credit to Newbold they sensed a possible 70/80 points and hauled themselves back in to the game. Both scores were not flash and Scouts were cursing the mistakes, buit it was the first league game and new players in new positions were being tried.
With 2nd half tries from Jervis and Dolman the finals score was 61-19. A well earnt win.
Man of the Match went to Noah Jervis, who scored 3 tries and scared the wotsits out of the opposition every time it came to his wing.
On to Towcester next week. That will be a quiet one......(!)
