However to suggest that there was nothing riding on this game was absolute nonsense. Pride between two strong clubs, a curtain raiser for next week’s EM Cup Semi Final and more to the point, that Scouts had not defeated Olney since U12s, added spice to this encounter.
With the pitch wet and muddy, this was never going to be a spectacle of open running rugby however neither side disappointed. Scouts drew first blood after just 5 minutes with a try from influential prop Micaiah Ramsay who drove over from close range. With the extras missed, Scouts being just 5 points to the better continuously took the game to the visitors, however for tough tackling and spillages from unforced errors, it was Olney who drew level with a try from Harry Warn who nipped through a gap at the side of a ruck and dotted down under the posts. With the extras being expected, Lewis Keable had other ideas and charged the kick down, to allow the scores to remain at 5 points a piece.
Scouts had a good chat at the break and believing that this would be their day continued to try and pressurise the visitors at every opportunity. 15 minutes into the second half in was Olney who picked up the next points as their fly half Elliot Simpson snuck in the right hand corner, however damaged his knee in the process. The extras were missed and after a delay due to the injury the game was moved onto the next pitch. The game continued to be even, and unfortunately Scouts ran out of time and their chance of overcoming the strong Olney team had gone, with the result staying at 10 points to 5.
With a strong belief that the best team had lost, they had to dust themselves down and prepare for the following weeks challenge, away at Olney in the East Midlands Cup Semi Final.
Result: Old Scouts 5 – 10 Olney
Try: Ramsay
