New Colts ERa

Lost 26-12 (T: Tom; pen.)

Friday night saw the start of a new era of Colts rugby at Old Scouts when a combined U16 / U17 team took on a full Colts squad from BBOB in front of a good crowd.

The step-up in intensity became evident right from the start. The teams seemed to be sizing each other up at first with BB getting an early advantage in the scrums. And it was BB who scored first following a Scouts handling error.

Scouts hit straight back from the restart. Following a scrum they worked their way into the opposition’s 22 and following a couple more phases, Tom crashed over from short range. Unfortunately the conversion attempt went wide to keep BB in front.

Scouts increased their lead, when an attempted clearance kick was charged down by Sammy who was then taken out whilst trying to follow it up. The referee correctly awarded a penalty try to give Scouts a 12-5 lead. They then came under pressure towards the end of the half, but big tackles and a scrum win against the head ensured that Scouts went into half-time with the lead intact.

At half-time, BB changed almost their whole team and played their full Colts side for the second half. Despite their continued outstanding defence, the fresh legs and increased physicality told in the end with BB running in three unanswered tries to run out 26-12 winners.
However, this was a really promising performance by Scouts. Despite fielding a full Colts side in the second half against an increasingly tired Scouts team, BB did not “blow them away” as they might have expected. Instead Scouts kept them out for long periods of the second half with a superb defensive display of which they can be mighty proud.

With a number of players due back from injury and others coming back to full fitness over the summer months, there’s a lot to be positive about for next season.

Tom was awarded the Man of the Match for a strong all round performance.
