Depleted Scouts Fight To The End

The U16s season got off to a difficult start when a depleted Scouts U16s side took on old foes Wellingborough in the opening league game. Due to injuries and other commitments, a number of the U15s squad were drafted in to assist and they adapted very well.

The game was very even at the start. Wellingborough had the better of the early exchanges, but some dogged defence held them out. Scouts then had their own period of pressure, but too many penalties conceded proved costly. The visitor’s pressure finally told and they went over for the opening try. Scouts again came back and had a try disallowed for a forward pass.

2 tries either side of half-time really put the result beyond doubt and a sloppy 10 minutes at the beginning of the second half saw Scouts concede further scores and at 31-0 it looked as though a hammering could be on the cards. Scouts, though showed good character to come back again.

They finally got on the scoresheet with a penalty kick from Caleb following some confusion as to what to do from the penalty. This was followed by a breakaway try from Ewen, converted by Caleb, making the final score 31-10 which was truer reflection of the match.
Both sides finished with 14 men with each side receiving a yellow card following a brawl. Unfortunately, this boiled over at the final whistle, however this shouldn’t take away from what was a good, competitive match.
