A Win,A Good Work Out But a New Season Wake Up Call for the Scouts

The entire squad of available players were taken to Ampthill for a friendly fixture for their first outing of the New Season. Ampthill were chosen as they have a strong Under 16 set up and a thorough work out was what the squad needed . We were not disappointed by Ampthill who were obviously a very capable team with a very strong and well drilled pack. From the start Scouts struggled to make the final ball stick and looked a little rusty at the breakdown allowing the strong Ampthill pack to pinch possession at crucial stages of the Scouts build up. Scouts lack of controlled possession allowed Ampthill to take the lead early on and such acted as a wake up call for the scouts who shortly after steadied the ship with a penaly from Ben Rivens.Scouts seemed to then find their feet with the penalty being followed by a well worked try finished by Dexter Watts which was nicely converted by Ben.Half Time 10-5 Scouts.

Half Time saw changes in the squad as Scouts continued to experiment both positionally and with the personnel on the pitch.Ampthill kept strong and took advantage of the changes that were occurring scoring two early second half tries(One converted) to race into a 17-10 lead. Credit to Scouts that heads remained high and as the new system settled the chances came .Firstly a typical scrum half snipe from Mitchell Hanley converted by Ben followed by a penalty from Ben in the last ten minutes of the game taken the scouts to a well earned and hard thought victory 20-17.
