The Old Scouts Fortress is in safe hands!

This weeks match report is from Coach Kelvin Hefford

This week was an opportunity for the squad to get some valuable game time, whilst half of the squad were put through their paces to learn some drills and play for a place in the upcoming Mobbs tournament.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Bletchley to the hallowed turf of Rushmere Road, also known as the fortress. Bletchley bought along about 12 kids which meant that they had enough for 1 team with rolling subs. The Old Scouts had enough to put two teams out with subs, which from a coaches point of view is a pleasure to see the depth of the squad we have available. It was also good to see these teams getting an opportunity to play some competitive rugby, and they didn’t disappoint. I’m not sure if the opposition were intimidated with the quality of the mo’s that were on show, but the 1st squad were strong from the off. All in all we played 3 games against a similar ability group, bearing in mind that this was the first choice squad that Bletchley had available and our teams won 2 of the 3 matches, it was a pleasure to see what the boys have been learning in training and put it into practice in the match environment. The boys were not afraid to tackle or run creating some fantastic moments. In the first game we even had some collisions taking place resulting in what can only be defined as shiners, luckily none of our players were involved as I like to believe our player was running so fast the two Bletchley players missed him and clashed heads…….

I could go through all of the squad and name something that impressed me from the three matches, but there are a couple that I would like comment on what an improvement we have seen.

Liam Folkes – Always running straight, thinking about the next pass and putting in some good tackles.
Fin Choat – Never giving up the chase, running back and putting in a tackle right on our own try line
Toby Heath – Running, side stepping and tackling in the games and getting involved

The rest of both teams, under the instruction of coaches from the side-line put so much pressure on the opposition that they forced them back to their own try line and made the 7 tackle turnover, it was great teamwork and team spirit and not the only 7 tackle turnover made on the day.

Finally our player of the week fully deserved the award for the attitude shown and determination to continue. James White Robinson was always trucking straight through the field making valuable meters and put in some great tackles as well, well done.

Well done to all that took part in the games, you should all be proud of how you played and we as coaches are really proud of how you all performed and maintaining the ground as a fortress, keep up the good work.
