In pretty murky wet and windy conditions Scouts ground out a win on Friday night in their first league encounter with Casuals for a number of years.
With the elements at their backs in the first half Scouts had the advantage but went behind early on to a penalty.
Using the wind to their advantage they soon equalised when Adam Frost banged over a penalty and Scouts continued on the offensive. On the half hour Casuals conceded a mid-field penalty which Frost kicked into the corner. From the resulting lineout Scouts caught the ball easily and drove hooker Alex Finney over the line. The conversion attempt went just wide of the posts and the score remained at 8 – 3 going into the break.
The weather was having a major effect on the game with both sides trying to gain an advantage but last minute mistakes stopped any progress. Scouts began to take control by driving the ball forward to keep the home side out of their half and increased the lead at the end of the third quarter. The ball came out of a maul and Frost took on his opposite number, side stepped him, and fed second row Iain Simmons who strode over the line to touch down. Frost added the extras.
Casuals increased the pressure on the Scouts defence and managed to reduce the deficit with two well struck penalties but try as they could they did not manage to break a tightly drilled Scouts defence although they did gain a losing bonus point for their efforts.
