Scouts travelled two hours for this Midlands quarter final with a much changed team that eventually gave a good account of themselves.
The home side were the more dangerous in the early encounters and looked to have scored from a forward drive but were pulled back by the referee for an infringement in the lineout. Malvern stayed on the offensive until they eventually unlocked the Scouts defence to touch down. The conversion was added and the lead increased with a penalty on the half hour. Scouts missed an opportunity to get on the scoresheet when a penalty attempt skewed wide of the sticks.
Former Gloucester and Cornish Pirates stand off Rob Cook was calling all the tunes for Malvern as they continued to play attacking rugby and they ran in another try in the corner which went unconverted as they went into the break fifteen points to the good.
Scouts had played their part in an exciting first half and whatever was said at half time stepped up another gear. The away team were now playing all the rugby and Malvern were struggling to contain them. Fifteen minutes into the second half, following sustained pressure scum half Ali Morin found prop Jordan Blakie on the charge to crash over for his third try in as many matches. Dean Lake converted.
Encouraged by the score Scouts continued in the same vain and when the ball was spun out to winger Matthew Cockman there was only going to be one result as he raced in to score one of his typical battering ram tries. Lake again converted to bring the score to within a point.
It was now game on and looked like the next score for either side would be crucial. Unfortunately for Scouts it was their hosts that exploited a midfield gap to race in. There was still fifteen minutes left on the clock but try as they could Scouts could not get back in the picture and Malvern added a fourth try at the death.
The final whistle was blown and both teams were warmly applauded as they left the playing area by a very large crowd that had thoroughly enjoyed the game.
